Weight training - Safe or not?

Q: Lee, I always admired bodybuilders and wanted to workout with weights. But one of my friends finger got cut in a pulley machine and I have even seen many people dropping weights on their foot and getting injured.

Is it safe?

A: The greatest danger of training with weights is traveling to the gym. (The number of gym accidents per year is not even 1% compared to the road accidents).

If you take the necessary safety measures its absolutely safe.

  1. Hi Murli ,

I would like to ask a question regarding Body building.

I am a 16 year old guy and i am really interested in bodybuilding. I have been going to the gym from the past one month daily. I workout for an hour daily and i have noticed some muscle gain. Although i have started devoloping muscles , they are quite lean. I would like to grow some mass on it.

I have seen many protien powders are available in the market which help one gain body mass and shape. What would you suggest I do ? My gym trainer says that I should take creatine , but I have heard it has its side effects. Are protien powders safe to take ?

If yes , then which protien powder would you recommend ? Should I wait for another 3 months before taking Protien shakes ?? Please advice.

Another question I have is that my parents are worried that my height growth may stunt due to bodybuilding. Many people say it , but I do not believe them. What do you think ? Does weight lifting stunts one's growth ?? I am 5'7 now , I would like to gain 3-4inches more.

    Thanks
    P

  2. prateek,

First of all i would like to say that this is the correct age to start bb and you can reach great muscular development by the age of 20 ...

considering your age and metabolism, you can actually grow huge muscles with just natural foods... but protein powders can be good - but i would suggest that you start taking protein powders after 6 months of experience in weight training.

And creatine has no side effects what so ever - but the labels always say that its for adults above 18.. i have no doubt in creatine that it gives results and when you take good quantity of water it has no side effects at all... but at this age i would not like you to take something whose label prevents you from taking... Do you get my point bro?

And height is totally dependent on your genetics and it will not be affected by your weight traiing.. i was 5 3 when i started bb and i was shortest among my friends... but it worked in a way that weight training regulated my hormones and am 5'9"

    so its all genetics bro

all the best and explore your potential and rock this world as a great bodybuilder

    cheers

  3. Thanks alot Murli , that was very helpful.

Can you also suggest me a Diet plan ? Like what to eat and what not to eat in order to get maximized results with respect to bodybuilding. I have heard that bodybuilders need a lot of protein intake in their food. What kind of foods can I eat which are easily available in market ? And should I also opt for a 6 meal a day diet plan as suggested by you in your other article ? I do not want to gain weight but I would like to gain some mass on my biceps and chest. As I mentined earlier my height is 5'7 and my weight is 64kgs and waist is 31.

I guess I'll ask you more questions abt protein shakes after 5 months then :)

    Thanks alot

  4. bluff master,

bro first of all - a bodybuilder needs 6 or even more meals because we are no normal man sitting at a desk and working with fingers... we brutally attack muscles and hence we need lots of protein and at a consistent rate... that is why we suggest 6 meals a day

stick to the basic moves like bench press, dead lifts and squats always cos these help in gaining overall size soon..

    cheers

  6. hi mohammed,

The basic problem is that your workout should not last more than an hour.. Cos that would deplete your muscle.

So workout each muscle once a week
workout should not last more than an hour

    have six meals a day

check out the basics outlined here - http://biglee-murali.blogspot.com/2008/03/maximum-muscle-gain.html

supplements are safe if you buy genuine brands bro

    cheers
