Dumbbells or Barbells?

What is your preference? Dumbbells or barbells?
We typically aren't limited to only barbells or dumbbells. Most trainees should use both barbells as well as dumbbell movements, because both have their own benefits and drawbacks.
So which one is best for you?
There are many factors involved so I would just outline some factors as described by experts.
Basically if you are in a power sport such as Powerlifting, Olympic lifting etc your sport mainly demands the work of both hands together, so you should mainly focus your training on barbells. On the other hand if you play basketball, volleyball, tennis or martial arts etc, then dumbbell drills should occupy the major portion of your training.
Availability & Cost: Dumbbells cost much more than a barbell. So if you are going to set up a gym in your home and if finance is a problem you will end up using exclusively barbells.
Strength Needs: If your sport demands ability to overcome large loads (Powerlifting, Olympic lifting etc), barbells will be your priority. The instability caused by dumbbells can limit the load you can lift.
So what is the conclusion?
Don’t limit yourself to barbells and dumbbells. Don’t forget that we have lot more options like machines, elastic band exercises, bodyweight exercises, kettle bags and lot more… Variety keeps the workouts more interesting. So exercise your creativity when it comes to your exercise selection.

  1. Hey, dude....
Goo to see this kinda thread.
And I actually settled for dumbbells as I workout at home......
And I do have a 3-foot long barbell, which I stick to, for doing biceps curls.....
But I am surprised to learn barbells are cheaper than dumbbells....
I thought it was the other way around...

  2. Hey, bro....
I can call myself as a fitness freak who has been working out at home for the past few years.....
I have adjustable dumbbells, small barbell, weight plats, push-up bars.... but am badly in need of a pull-up bar.....
I was resorting to chinning in sunshades and lofts but that was not the effective way on the long run but it was a very good way to start with....

Right now, I am badly in need of a pull-up bar which can be installed at home without much fuss..... Surfed through many sites and zeroed in on many that could actually fit my bill. I also took to some reputed sports shops in search of one but to no avail....
All I could find was a simple chinning bar which was not even feet wide.....

IS there any solution for this?
also went through some sites... Here are they.....
I am looking for ones like these in the links....

Hope you understand as I am in need of doing/continuing my wide grip chin-ups....

    Thanks in advance, buddy....
Looking forward to hearing from you on this.....

  3. Hi Bikeman,

Dumbbells can not accommodate much weight if you are using the weight adding ones.. as the dumbbell tends to be much lengthier...

And to avoid that we use different sizes of standard dumbbells and hence they are costlier...

Regarding pull up bar...dont waste your money..

Get the help of a carpenter or someone who can fix a big iron rod on an entrance..

For example if you have a entrance to a room without door(which is more than 2 feet wide, fix an iron rod between it and you will have a great pull up bar.. Cost= iron rod(500rupees) charges for the carpenter to make a hole on the wall and fixing and cementing stuffs... (total cost will be much cheaper than buying these stuffs and importing

    cheers

  4. Hey, bro.....
That's good to hear.. and thanks
    :-}

So, climbing up the poundage ladder, dumbbells can dig a deep hole in your wallet.... got the bottomline....

And on the pull-up bar front, I'll be going your way if I don't discover one like ones in the links locally....

    Thanks for your reply, dude....
    Keep rocking.....

  5. Biglee,
first of all let me congratulate you on your great blog.
I have been reading and following your advise for some time now with great results.

I have been working out for past 4 months now and i have seen considerable gains in my strength and gain in my muscle mass.
Now i have moved to a remote area where i do not have access to a gym or weights. But i would like to continue my work out.
Please advise how can i continue the momentum i have gained in my training.

My target areas are shoulders, forearms and legs.
May i add another question. can i do push ups and sit ups regularly without causing any muscle lock or reducing gains.
    My stats are 6'1", 168lbs, 25 years.

    thanks a lot.

  7. Hi Prestine Devil,

I advise you to search for a gym...

but if you are not able to fine one in your reach buy a barbell and arrange for a bench and stuffs.. I know it will cost you lot of money... But if you have a goal then proceed for it... And start doing the basics

REg. Phsuhps and sit ups... TRain each muscle like a muscle and no muscle is more important and stuffs.. Give more priorities to weak parts by increasing the volume or by frequency

    cheers
